The most inspiring way to organise your fabric stash

Do you loose track of all the fabrics in your stash and even forget what you have? Maybe you aren’t sure what the fabrics are made from, how long each length is and what you planned on making with it?

Do you find it hard to buy fabrics online when you don’t have a reference point of what different fabrics feel like?

It’s so easy it is to gather a fabulous stash of fabrics, only to lose track of exactly what you’ve got hidden away! It’s such a shame when you suddenly remember that pretty floral cotton you bought months ago—or worse, forget entirely until you stumble across it while rummaging for something else.

That’s exactly why we designed the My Fabric Stash Folder—to keep your sewing plans clear and your creativity flowing. There is something really special about having a physical record of your fabrics: it’s nostalgic, tactile, practical, and a lovely way to spark new ideas. There’s a certain magic in flipping through swatches and letting your imagination wander. Whether you’re planning your next project or just admiring your collection, it’s such a delight to see all those beautiful prints and textures in one place and it’s such a game-changer if you’re prone to stashing fabrics faster than you can use them!

What Makes It Special?

The folder itself is a neat, compact binder, made right here in the UK from recycled paper. It comes with five customisable dividers plus enough record pages to log up to 52 different fabrics. You’ll find spaces to note all the important details—from fabric type and composition to how much length you have left.

There’s even a handy stretch percentage calculator page, which is brilliant for working out if that jersey you’ve been eyeing is going to be perfect for a snug T-shirt or a more relaxed fit.

Cutting a small swatch of fabric and sticking it into your folder can be really relaxing and satisfying.. It’s a tactile way to remind yourself what that fabric looks and feels like—especially if you’re buying online and need a quick reference to compare textures in the future.

If you have a tendency to get a little sentimental about fabrics, it’s lovely to be able to keep a bit of that gorgeous patterned viscose,  almost like a keepsake of all the makes you’ve created.

Keeping Your Sew-Jo Flowing

Simply sorting and logging your  fabrics can often  reignite your sewing motivation. You get to rediscover gems you’d forgotten about, and it’s a brilliant way to spot potential pairings or new project ideas. When everything’s neatly labelled and you can see exactly what you’ve got—along with notes on drape, weight, or stretch—it’s so much easier to feel confident picking out the right pattern for each fabric.

And if you tend to forget what project you had in mind in the first place, the folder has a space for that too. Imagine how much time you’ll save not having to measure your fabric repeatedly or hunt down fibre content info. It’s all right there on the page. Some people also like to take pictures of finished garments and pop them in the folder, so they can look back on a lovely mini timeline of projects they’ve made.

How to use the Stash Folder

Using the My Fabric Stash Folder is super easy! Simply cut a little square of fabric—enough to see the weave or print—then secure it onto the record card with double-sided tape. Next, fill in all the details you can recall: fabric name (like “cotton lawn” or “French terry”), composition if you know it, the length you have, any pattern ideas, and, of course, your stretch calculation if it’s a knit. The folder includes a handy measuring gauge to help you do that. I find this so helpful when choosing patterns for knits, as you can see exactly how much give the fabric has.

Don’t worry if you can’t remember everything—just jot down what you do know. Over time, you’ll build a little fabric diary that’s wonderful to flip through. Plus, the folder comes with stickers and fun dividers, so you can customise it to your heart’s content. Perhaps you’ll categorise your stash by fabric type, season, or even how keen you are to sew with each piece next!

A Handy Reference for Future Fabric Purchases

Creating an archive of different fabrics can really help when shopping online. If you're looking at a fabric described as a ‘viscose crepe’, for example, you can open your folder and look at something similar you already have on record.

It takes away a bit of the guesswork, especially if you’re trying to match weight or drape for a specific pattern. It can also stop you from accidentally purchasing multiple fabrics that are basically the same—unless, of course, you really love that fabric!

Ready to Get Started?

If you’re ready to dive in and organise your stash, or maybe you’re just curious about having a physical record of your sewing resources, the My Fabric Stash Folder is a lovely place to start. It’s surprising how much a little bit of tidying up can refresh your creativity.

Happy sewing and may your stash be ever in your favour!
